A feasibility study should close decisions, not create a report shelf.

A useful feasibility stage turns an operating problem into a traceable technical and commercial basis, compares complete system options and identifies what still has to be closed before investment.

Load and reliability

Confirm measured demand, peak and critical load, operating hours, growth, outage history, current energy sources and the consequence of interruption.

Site and interfaces

Confirm available land or roof area, access, environmental constraints, cable routes, substations, existing switchgear, connection points, fuel interface and room for future expansion.

Technology and dispatch

Compare complete architectures rather than individual products. State firm generation, renewable contribution, storage duty, reserve margin, network arrangement, controls and the expected operating sequence.

Commercial basis

State CAPEX assumptions, delivered energy-cost drivers, fuel or grid price, utilisation, maintenance, availability, commercial model and the sensitivities that could materially change the decision.

Delivery and approvals

Identify permitting or approval dependencies, procurement route, long-lead equipment, site enabling works, construction interfaces, commissioning requirements and the party responsible for each decision.

Decision and next stage

End with a clear preferred route or defined decision gate, the evidence supporting it, unresolved uncertainties, additional surveys or design work, and the conditions that should be met before capital commitment.

What should a feasibility checklist prevent?

It should prevent major assumptions from disappearing between engineering, commercial and delivery workstreams. The checklist keeps the load, interfaces, economics, approvals and open actions connected.

When is a project ready to move beyond feasibility?

When the preferred architecture is supported by adequate evidence, key uncertainties have defined closure actions, the commercial basis is credible and the next design or procurement stage has a clear scope.

Should feasibility identify a preferred option?

Where the evidence is sufficient, yes. Where it is not, the study should define the decision gate and the specific information required to select between the remaining options.
